Seems everyone's having a birthday - including drift, which celebrates birthday numero uno today!
I was inspired by three people to begin this blog. Bolton Gray's blog was the first I ever read, Tom Judson's was one blog I stumbled across (via Gus Mattox) and Sheila from My Arms Fold Back started her blog around the time I contemplated creating my own and she urged me to do it (she's always been a few weeks ahead of me, right from birth).
Like a lot of bloggers I wasn't too sure where I was taking this, which is one reason I chose the name drift. I've been keeping journals and diaries for years n years, but I didn't want this to be the same as those. All I knew was I wanted to remain anonymous so I wouldn't be inhibited in what I write. I like the idea of being able to reveal secrets and to be explicit if I feel like it. I've only told three or four people about this blog - others have found it on their own, which is exactly what I was hoping for. And perhaps I should be known as the lazy blogger - I don't even alphabetise my links (crikey, I hardly ever bother to link).
I'm glad I bothered to add a counter. I was pleased to see it reach 1965 today because that's the year I was born and it just seems fitting. I get a buzz out of seeing where in the world people are coming from too. Who knows what they make of it? Doesn't really matter, though I wish a few more readers would leave comments. Don't be shy...
It's been a blessing to "meet" other bloggers. Sometimes I get a lil bit of a crush on them. Words can do that. I'd like to attend a blog-meet, but then there's that question of anonymity. Would I expect people to only call me Nash? Would I then change my style of blogging? (Do I even have a style?). Oh, that's enough.
Thanks to everyone for dropping by. Come on, let's have some cake...

Well, we've attended a blog meet of sorts - and that didn't interupt your blogging style. Happy First Blogging Birthday Nash! May you blog and blog and blog (would you ever reveal which bloggers in the blogoshpere you have a crush on? What a great post that would be...and then everyone who leaves comments could confess there blogging crushes as well - links included of course).
Thanks Sheila, you cheeky monkey. Yeah, I problee would reveal my crushes... how about you?
I think I could have my arm twisted...
Many Happy Carriage Returns!
Happy Blog Birthday, Nash. BTW, Miss Litzi said you could have a piece of her cake. Better hurry up before I eat too much of it.
Thank you for stopping by both my places.
Hi Nash,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to “Drift”!! One year and still going strong! Congratulations, Nash! Another “coincidence file” entry that you’ve had 1965 “hits” and that’s the year you were born. They never stop, do they? That’s part of what makes your posts so fascinating to read; the unexpected that you knew about beforehand or another piece of the puzzle that fits in perfectly to the whole picture.
I wandered over to your site from Sheila and found your posts informative, funny and extremely sensitive. You’ve always got something inspiring to discuss, even when you feel you don’t. Reading your posts gives me a real boost and insight into life in Australia. “Do I have a style?” Of course you do; your wit, the way you relate to the world around you, and whatever is happening in your life are all integral parts of your “style”. That’s what has made “Drift” stand apart from other blogs and keeps us all coming back for the next installment in your world.
I’ve mentioned to two or three acquaintances that I’m a “blogger”; they just nod and go on about their lives. To my knowledge, no one who “knows” the real Litzi has ever seen my blog or read any of my comments. It used to disturb me, but like you mentioned, there’s something to be said about the anonymity of writing under an alias in cyberspace. Would we really “open up” quite so freely if the next-door neighbor was reading our posts? Do you ever wonder if the “relationships” we make in Bloggsville are more intimate or personal because we’re more apt to be honest with one another than in the real world? Just a thought; it’s something I want to ponder…
So while I’m a year older than dirt, you’re still a “youngster” spreading his wings and trying out new things everyday! Please keep “Drift” going; you’re a wonderful person who has a lot to say and give to the world and I hope we can all give a part of ourselves to you in return. You deserve the biggest piece of the Birthday Cake!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR “DRIFT”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU….
AND MANY MORE!!!!!!!
Hey Nash...stumbled across your blog today (as you do) - shame I hadn't stumbled across it earlier. We actually had a Sydney Bloggers meet in February which was pretty good. We'll keep you in mind for next time! ;-) Keep up the blogging, I'm liking what I've read so far!
Happy Birthday to Drift!
Nash, like all the comments above, I reckon you have a great way of expressing yourself and I'm very glad to have 'met' you.
After what you said about linking, I feel honoured that I'm one of them.
Looking forward to reading more.
Wow, there's a lotta love going around. So, from a new blogger to one having his first birthday here's a birthday kiss for the birthday boy!
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your comments and good wishes (and the kiss)...
In answer to Miss Litzi's question about the "relationships" we make in Bloggsville, I think the process of being intimate/personal just happens a bit quicker than in the real world.
Monty,
Thanks for stumbling in. I knew about the Sydney (Gay) Bloggers' meet in Feb, but I was at a wedding
In the words of the late, great Sheila Florance:
"I love you all"
A slightly belated Happy Birthday!
We share a lot of the same circle it seems. I can't remember how I came across your blog, maybe through a link from fellow blogger (and real life photography friend) Laubscher. I was also interested to see your mention of "Bolton Gray". Dan was one of the first famous people I blogged about who contacted me through my blog, after he appeared on "Outback House" and read my blog reviews. Also, one of the first people to ever leave a comment on my blog (and a dirty one at that) was Michael of "Pipedreams".
Small world eh?
Hi The Other Andrew,
It is a small world... I know I found your blog through Have Phaser Will Travel and then found Laubscher through you. I possibly found Pipedreams via you too. At least I found Bolton Gray on my own! (Until now I had no idea of your connection to lovely Dan)
Ha! Therin Of Andor of "Have Phaser Will Travel" and I have been friends for about 20 years (in the real world) and I think I can take some credit in getting him started with blogging! The circle gets even smaller... :)
Happy Blogging Birthday. well done
Happy (Belated) First birthday!
Stumbled across your blog today and will continue to enjoy reading it :)
Here's to many more years!
Thanks NSSG and Volacious - I saved you both some cake...
Easter school holidays, and being out of town, I missed your anniversary! Congratulations.
Well, that's amazing! I just received an automated bounced email from your blogsite, and it has your other email address - and seems we've known each other almost as long as I've known The Other Andrew.
If you recall, I first found your blog when it turned up in a blog search about that Abigail autobiography I'd just bought. I hadn't connected this blog with one of my ol' "Number 96" contacts. Sly devil. ;) And I managed to miss finding you at both Andrew Mercado's book launch, a few years ago, and the Powerhouse TV exhibit!
We should try to catch up for coffee some time!
Oh Therin,
And I thought you knew all along! Let's meet at Norma's Wine Bar
Fine with me!
You know, "Jack's Cellars" restaurant in Kingsford, Sydney (which still existed up till a few years ago) was styled after "Norma's Bar" and even had a spare nude Norma painting on display. The restaurant was once owned by Tom Oliver, ie. Jack Sellars.
But, in the late 70s, my French teacher from high school introduced me to a now long-gone pancake restaurant in Glebe, by the name of "Ashley's Crepes". Whether by purposeful design or not, that restaurant had the same decore, curtains, tables, window art and general atmosphere as "Norma's Bar". Quite uncanny.
